The Sougia – Agia Roumeli route is one of the most impressive and demanding coastal trails in southern Crete. It is part of the European path E4, which follows a unique route along the Libyan Sea, combining wild natural landscapes, isolated beaches and panoramic views of the southern coastline of Chania.
General information
The hike starts from Sougia and ends in Agia Roumeli, the coastal village located at the exit of the Samaria Gorge. The total route is approximately 18–20 kilometers long and requires 6 to 8 hours of hiking, depending on the pace and stops.
The trail is considered demanding due to its long duration, continuous elevation changes and exposure to the sun. However, it rewards hikers with unique images of wild nature, cliffs that end in the sea and secluded coves with crystal clear waters.
The experience of the route
Along the hike, visitors pass small coves, pine-covered slopes, traditional chapels and deserted beaches that are only accessible by foot or boat. The route offers continuous panoramic views of the Libyan Sea and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Greece.
Agia Roumeli, where the route ends, is an isolated seaside village without road access, known for its natural tranquility and authentic Cretan atmosphere.
