Imbros Gorge is one of the most beautiful and easily accessible gorges in Crete, ideal for those who want to experience the unique nature of Sfakia without the great difficulty of Samaria. It is located in southern Chania, near Chora Sfakia, and is an excellent choice for families, nature lovers and visitors looking for an authentic hiking experience in impressive rocky landscapes.
General information
The hiking route starts from the mountain village of Imbros, at an altitude of approximately 700–780 meters, and ends in the village of Komitades. The gorge is approximately 8 kilometers long and its crossing usually takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the pace and stops of the visitors.
Imbros Gorge is part of the European trail E4 and is considered one of the most accessible hiking routes in Crete. Unlike other canyons, it can be traversed almost all year round, making it particularly popular in spring and autumn.
The experience of the route
The route is mainly downhill and passes through imposing limestone walls, dense Mediterranean vegetation and impressive geological formations. In several places, the rocks rise up to 300 meters, while the passage narrows to just two meters, creating an impressive natural setting.
Along the hike, visitors enjoy peaceful landscapes, natural shade from cypress trees and unique images of wild Cretan nature. The route is well signposted and ideal even for those who do not have much experience in hiking
Although the canyon is considered easy, basic physical condition and special care during the hot summer months are recommended.

Completing the route in Komitades gives visitors the opportunity to experience the authentic side of Sfakia and enjoy traditional Cretan flavors in local taverns in the area. Many combine the hike with a visit to Chora Sfakia or a swim in the beaches of the Libyan Sea.
